improving business efficiency
Can you give me an eg. of where govt. has improved efficiency in anything they have involved themselves in?

Basically, I mean where the govt. has intervened in some aspect of economy, business, health care, etc, etc, that they have had a positive net effect overall. (not in just ONE aspect of it, but overall)

yes. they improved the efficiency of getting your hard earned money by raising taxes.

Managing, Controlling, and Improving Quality

Managing, Controlling, and Improving Quality

$74.5

This book presents an organized approach to quality management, control, and improvement. Because quality problems usually are the outcome of uncontrolled or excessive variability, statistical tools and other analytical methods play an important role in solving these problems. However, these techniques need to be implemented within a management structure that will ensure success. This text focuses on both the management structure and the statistical and analytical tools. It organizes and presents this material according to many years of teaching, research, and professional practice across a wide range of business and industrial settings.

Better Green Business: Handbook for Environmentally Responsible and Profitable Business Practices

Better Green Business: Handbook for Environmentally Responsible and Profitable Business Practices

$20

Better Green Businessbrings together practical insights and start-to-finish strategies for moving any enterprise to a higher level of environmental stewardship. Drawing on his extensive experience at IBM, Dr. Eric Olson shows how to systematically drive “win-win-win” gains: growing top-line revenue, helping customers increase efficiency, and improving the environment at the same time. Olson’s business-focused guidance covers every step of your green business program, from strategy formulation through continuous improvement. He first offers a complete framework for approaching and formulating green strategy, using case studies to identify potential opportunities and business benefits. Next, using real case studies, he demonstrates how to define initiatives, construct roadmaps for transforming vision into reality, and link each investment to business strategy, so businesses can accurately measure results. Olson introduces powerful business process transformation methodologies and technologies for increasing operational efficiency and reducing waste, including IBM’s breakthrough Green Sigma approach. He also identifies new opportunities to drive value by “instrumenting the planet,” and introduces new technologies that make this possible. Finally, Olson assesses long-term trends that will make “green business” even more crucial in the coming years.

Psychology And Industrial Efficiency

Psychology And Industrial Efficiency

Our aim is to sketch the outlines of a new science which is to intermediate between the modern laboratory psychology and the problems of economics: the psychological experiment is systematically to be placed at the service of commerce and industry. So far we have only scattered beginnings of the new doctrine, only tentative efforts and disconnected attempts which have started, sometimes in economic, and sometimes in psychological, quarters. The time when an exact psychology of business life will be presented as a closed and perfected system lies very far distant. But the earlier the attention of wider circles is directed to its beginnings and to the importance and bearings of its tasks, the quicker and the more sound will be the development of this young science. What is most needed to-day at the beginning of the new movement are clear, concrete Illustrations which demonstrate the possibilities of the new method. In the following pages, accordingly, it will be my aim to analyze the results of experiments which have actually been carried out, experiments belonging to many different spheres of economic life. But these detached experiments ought always at least to point to a connected whole; the single experiments will, therefore, always need a general discussion of the principles as a background. In the interest of such a wider perspective we may at first enter into some preparatory questions of theory. They may serve as an introduction which is to lead us to the actual economic life and the present achievements of experimental psychology.

$10.49

Climate change can be an emotive issue. This book takes a cool look at the subject and shows you what makes it relevant to your business. A big part of the answer is energy. Computers consume a lot of energy, and energy costs money. The cost of powering and cooling data servers over three years is currently 1.5 times the cost of purchasing the server hardware. Over the next two decades, global demand for energy is predicted to rise by 50%, which means that your long-term energy costs are also likely to increase. In the end, if your organisation’s energy costs are high, it makes sense for you to focus on ways to reduce energy consumption. Improving the efficiency of data centre power supplies and reducing IT power requirements in the office are examples of how Green IT can yield a substantial return on investment. This business guide to Green IT was written to introduce, to a business audience, the opposing groups and the key climate change concepts, to provide an overview of a Green IT strategy and to set out a straightforward, bottom-line orientated Green IT action plan.

 Algorithms For Efficient Learning Systems

Algorithms For Efficient Learning Systems

$80.53

In the last few decades, we have been witnessing an information revolution that can be traced back to the invention of integrated circuits and computer chips. The widespread use of electronic devices and computing resources has tremendously increased the rate at which we generate, gather and store data in every fields of science, business and engineering. Machine learning takes center stage in our quest for analyzing this vast amount of data and extracting latent knowledge from it. However, as the datasets grow, increased running time and memory constraints may become prohibitive. Additionally, real-world data can have noise and imbalanced class distribution, which adversely affect the generalization accuracy of learning algorithms. In order to cope with these challenges, science in the 21st century requires a different set of computational techniques and algorithms. This book presents methodologies that address these issues with the goal of improving scalability, computational and data efficiency and generalization performance of machine learning algorithms in the context of online and active learning with a particular focus on Support Vector Machines.

Clear Water, Blue Skies: China's Environment in the New Century

Clear Water, Blue Skies: China’s Environment in the New Century

$3.57

Since 1978 China ‘ s economy has produced economic growth rates making it one of the fastest growing economies. In the same period, China ‘ s environment has deteriorated significantly. Rapid urbanization and industrialization have generated enormous volumes of air and water pollutants, lowering air and water quality. China ‘ s urban population soared, moving more Chinese closer to industrial smokestacks and residential emissions and increasing the number of people exposed to polluted urban air and water. This report focuses on two of China ‘ s most pressing environmental concerns -air and water pollution- and their relation to economic growth. Specifically, it addresses three questions: What are the costs of pollution in China today? Will future economic growth impair or improve air and water quality? And what policies are needed now to ensure that rising incomes translate into a higher environmental standard of living for current and future generations? Chapter 2 estimates the costs of pollution -urban air pollution, indoor air pollution, water pollution, and lead pollution- on health (premature deaths and sicknesses); and assesses the damage to productive resources and urban infrastructure. Chapter 3 examines the economic reforms and environmental policies that can hold pollution costs in check. Various scenarios are presented: the business-as-usual scenario and alternative scenarios that increase fuel substitutions, improve energy efficiency and conservation and diversify energy supplies, invest in air pollution control, develop public transportation systems and discourage vehicle use, raise the abatement rate for industrial water pollution, and increase the coverage and level ofmunicipal wastewater treatment. Chapter 4 concentrates on improving efficiency and developing coal alternatives, and controlling emissions by industrial, power, commercial, and household sources. Chapter 5 focuses on China ‘ s need to revamp its regulatory system to harness market

Competing on the Edge: Strategy as Structured Chaos

Competing on the Edge: Strategy as Structured Chaos

$35

The 10 Rules of Competing on the Edge If you want to play in the new strategy game, you've got to know the rules. Here are Shona Brown and Kathleen Eisenhardt's guidelines for managers who want to abandon their old-strategy mindset for today's “on the edge” strategy. where the name of the game is change: Strategy Rule 1: Advantage is Temporary On the edge managers understand that competitive advantage is fleeting. So, they focus on continuously generating new sources of advantage and never lose sight of the fact that today's winning strategy will probably not work tomorrow. In their minds, change is an opportunity – not a threat. Rule 2: Strategy is Diverse, Emergent, and Complicated Strategy is a diverse collection of moves that are loosely linked together in a semi-coherent direction. Managers who compete on the edge let strategy emerge by making a variety of moves, seeing what happens, and following through on those that work. They end up playing a broader and more surprising set of strategic options than others. Rule 3: Reinvention is the Goal On the edge managers scan for opportunities to reinvent the business and then let profits follow. Creating value takes higher priority than improving efficiency when it's accepted that profit juggernauts are rare finds, and continual reinvention is the smarter path to long-term profitability. Organization Rule 4: Live in the Present The most important time frame is today. The key to effectively managing today is to maximize the minimum organizational structure. Firms that compete on the edge use just enough structure to prevent thingsfrom flying apart, keep businesses poised for change, and managers aware of opportunities, but allow enough room for innovation, personalization, and experimentation. Rule 5: Stretch Out the Past On the edge managers realize that the past is often the greatest
