Best Practices In Business

Learn the Latest Best Practices In Business Presenting
Curious how you can learn the latest best practices in presenting? Many executives, business owners and entrepreneurs are asking the same question. And finding the solution is simple: online courses.
In light of recent news about the perils of ‘death by PowerPoint’ many professionals are seeking presentation skills development. No longer satisfied with relying on slide-only delivery, they know what you may have felt for some time: new methods of delivery require new best practices.
If you have spent thousands of hours learning all the bells and whistles of PowerPoint or Keynote, you may approach further education with some trepidation. What about all that you have invested?
Don’t worry. Just because you want to avoid killing your audiences with too many slides, doesn’t mean you will never use slides to communicate.
Instead of fretting over lost time, get busy learning the latest best practices.
My advice is to focus on three key areas:
Storytelling, visual communicating and specific actions.
These three areas will help you use slides in the right mix – but not fall victim to ’slide craziness.’
Let’s look briefly at why these three areas are the foundation of vital best practices in presenting.
Best Practice 1. Storytelling
Today’s audiences are overwhelmed with data and information. They want a juicy and persuasive story. They need to connect the dots between random bits of statistics so they can make sense of what it all means.
When you become an exceptional storyteller, you can win over audiences that might be overloaded or disengaged. It’s the fastest way to win attention — and keep it.
Best Practice 2. Visual Communicating
From neuroscience to advertising, the research is clear. People respond to visual communication more than the written word alone. Visuals stick. If you haven’t made friends with visual language, visual communication and interactive visual presenting you are missing the boat.
The fastest way to encourage visual interaction is at a whiteboard. Of course, if your writing is illegible chicken scratch and your drawings are funky, you need help.
But there’s good news: you can learn to draw at a whiteboard, guide interactive conversation, and make a powerful impact. Learning this skill is easier and simpler than you might imagine.
Best Practice 3. Specific Actions
As an executive, you already know that leadership is all about action. But, still an alarming number of leaders give presentations without giving clear instructions. There are specific new ways to show action, tell action, tell stories about action, and get people coming up with specific action plans.
When you use these three best practices, you won’t miss your slides. Instead, you might have a head-slapping moment. You won’t believe you ever gave a presentation without using these 3 vital practices.
What’s the quickest way to hone your skills in these areas? Online presentation skills training. It’s fast, convenient and easy to fit into your hectic calendar.
Use new best practices in presenting to get the most results. With a small investment in your education, you can expect to see a dramatic improvement in your presentation skills.

13 Bankers: The Wall Street Takeover and the Next Financial Meltdown $15.95 Even after the ruinous financial crisis of 2008, America is still beset by the depredations of an oligarchy that is now bigger, more profitable, and more resistant to regulation than ever. Anchored by six megabanks—Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, Wells Fargo, Goldman Sachs, and Morgan Stanley—which together control assets amounting, astonishingly, to more than 60 percent of the country’s gross domestic product, these financial institutions (now more emphatically “too big to fail”) continue to hold the global economy hostage, threatening yet another financial meltdown with their excessive risk-taking and toxic “business as usual” practices. How did this come to be—and what is to be done? These are the central concerns of 13 Bankers, a brilliant, historically informed account of our troubled political economy. In 13 Bankers, Simon Johnson—one of the most prominent and frequently cited economists in America (former chief economist of the International Monetary Fund, Professor of Entrepreneurship at MIT, and author of the controversial “The Quiet Coup” in The Atlantic)—and James Kwak give a wide-ranging, meticulous, and bracing account of recent U.S. financial history within the context of previous showdowns between American democracy and Big Finance: from Thomas Jefferson to Andrew Jackson, from Theodore Roosevelt to Franklin Delano Roosevelt. They convincingly show why our future is imperiled by the ideology of finance (finance is good, unregulated finance is better, unfettered finance run amok is best) and by Wall Street’s political control of government policy pertaining to it. As the authors insist, the choice that America faces is stark: whether Washington will accede to the vested interests of an unbridled financial sector that runs up profits in good years and dumps its losses on taxpayers in lean years, or reform |

A Guide to Building Education Partnerships: Navigating Diverse Cultural Contexts to Turn Challenge into Promise $27.5 Education partnerships are central to – and often a requirement of – most education reform initiatives promoted by state and local governments, by foundations, and by business funders. Many fail for failure to understand the dynamics of their complex relationships. This book provides insights and guidance to enable prospective and existing education partners to develop answers to the questions that are critical to success: Why engage in this partnership? How can you communicate the potential benefits of partnership to motivate teachers, faculty, administrators, and community members? How do you select the best organizational structure and procedures for a partnership? How can you maintain open, deliberative discussion while respecting different histories and cultures? How can you produce compelling evidence that the partnership is worthwhile? Based on their observation of a five-year-long publicly funded partnership, research data, and the literature, the authors identify the principles that they consider critical to answering these questions. The authors do not minimize the differences and complexities inherent in partnership work, because they believe that doing so would be to present coherence and homogeneity where none exists. Instead, they seek to make evident how these principles underlie many different partnership situations. Thus, rather than presenting a package of best practices, or a cookie-cutter approach, this book presents the organizational principles for planning and implementing education partnerships, along with sets of strategies for working through them. The authors present the diagnostic tools for undertaking a deliberate and research-based approach to planning, designing, and managing a partnership. By surfacing participants’ often-differing motivations, and the practices and assumptions they bring to the table, the book provides the foundation for developing a constructive relationship. In scope, the book extends |

A qualitative analysis of a multicultural program assisting in the retention of undergraduate business students from under-represented groups at a predominantly White state university. $69 Both the U.S. population and college enrollments nationally are becoming increasingly diverse racially and ethnically. While students from under-represented groups continue to enroll in higher education in record numbers, African American and Hispanic students continue to drop out at higher rates than their White and Asian counterparts. An ongoing challenge for colleges and universities is to adapt to addressing the needs of their changing populations. Given the politically charged atmosphere that surrounds affirmative action programs at institutions of higher education, it is essential for educators who value diversity to implement the best practices for recruiting, retaining and graduating students from under-represented groups. This qualitative grounded theory study examined the perceptions and involvements of students and alumni who are or were engaged in multicultural program activities at predominantly White state university in a rural area of California. Participants in this research reported a clear sense of welcoming from the multicultural program staff while being recruited to attend the university, as well as a strong sense of belonging to the university community that was akin to “family” once they enrolled and became engaged in the program’s activities. The findings of this study have implications for educators working to enhance the persistence of students from under-represented groups in higher education. |

Accountants’ Truth: Knowledge and Ethics in the Financial World $35 Accounting is the language of business, increasingly standardized across the world through powerful global corporations: a technical skill used to reach the correct, unquestionable answer. Yet, as recent corporate scandals have shown, a whole range of financial professionals (auditors, bankers, analysts, company directors) can collectively fail to question dubious actions. How can this be possible? To understand such failures, this book explores how accountants construct the technical knowledge they deem relevant to decision-making. In doing so, it not only offers a new way to understand deviance and scandals, but also suggests a reappraisal of accounting knowledge which has important implications for everyday commercial life. The book is based on interviews with chartered accountants working in the largest accountancy practices in London. The interviews reveal that although accounting decisions seem clear after they have been made, the process of making them is contested and opaque. Yet accountants nonetheless tend to describe their work as if it were straightforward and technical. Accountants’ Truth digs beneath the surface to explore how accountants actually construct knowledge, and draws out the implications of that process with respect to issues such as professionalism, performance, transparency, and ethics. This important book concludes that accountants’ technical discourse undermines their ethical reasoning by obscuring the ways in which accounting decisions must be thought through in practice. Accountants with particular ethical perspectives more readily understand and construct particular types of knowledge, so the two issues of knowledge and of ethics are inseparable. Increasingly technical accounting rules can therefore counterproductive. Instead, our best approach to avoiding future scandals is to redefine and reinvigorate professional ethics in the financial world. |
